Wegmans officially opened its two-floor, 87,600-square-foot Astor Place store in the historic district of lower Manhattan this morning. It is Wegmans' second New York City location. The retailer's Brooklyn store debuted in 2019.
“We know our customers can’t wait to come see what we have in store and our employees have been training, in some cases, for over a year to get ready for this day,” said store manager Matt Dailor, in a statement. More than 600 employees will work at the location.
Wegmans occupies the space on both the street and lower level of an historic building on Broadway, built in 1907 by architect Daniel Burnham.
With the entire first floor dedicated to prepared foods in Wegmans Food Hall, the location emphasizes grab-and-go eats and easy mealtime solutions. Offerings includes sushi, fresh-made salads, sandwiches, soups, pizza, wings, hot Asian cuisine options, and Mediterranean-diet-inspired offerings. The store's bakery and Wegmans Meals2GO pickup area are located nearby.
The store's basement level includes an expansive produce section and devoted meat, seafood, and cheese counters. The deli and dairy sections are also found here, along with center store aisles. Traditional sections are also on this floor, like frozen, spices, and cereals; however, alongside them are spaces dedicated to health care, plant-based beverages, functional beverages, active nutrition, and special diet offerings like meatless protein, plant-based meals, gluten-free, and kosher offerings. The global flavor section is broken into two aisles, and separated by Italian, Indian, Asian, Latino, and European packaged goods.
The on-site dining room, featuring a Sushi Bar and Champagne-Oyster Bar, is not yet open for business. It is expected to launch in the first half of 2024.
