Walmart to Close Three Stores

Specialty Food Association

Walmart revealed that it plans to shutter three stores near Chicago, one of which facilitated among the first pickup- and delivery-only pilots in the U.S., reports Chicago Tribune.

Walmart is also closing its other alternative format pilot stores, according to company spokesperson Felicia McCranie.

The Lincolnwood pickup and delivery pilot will close on February 17. The two other stores in the Chicago area, located in Plainfield and Homewood, will close on March 10.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Lincolnwood location,” McCranie said in a statement.

The decision to close came after a review process that found that the stores had not been performing to expectations. Part of this issue may be due to the hypermarket’s density: six Walmart stores are located within ten miles of the Lincolnwood pilot.
