Walmart Tests Self-Checkout Only Location

Walmart is testing an all-self-checkout Supercenter in Plano, Texas, reports The Dallas Morning News. The checkouts have employees standing by to help if customers need it.

The first all-self-checkout supercenter opened in Fayetteville, Arkansas last summer. According to Lauren Willis, spokeswoman for Walmart in Texas, there are other stores testing all-self-checkout, but the Plano location is the only one in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Shoppers are still undecided about how they feel about the technology, but they have noted that it’s faster than traditional checkout.

“I’ve yet to come in and see a line to check out,” said 29-year-old shopper Kayla Evans. “But I have mixed feelings about it. I know how to do the self-checkout, but at the same time they were paying a cashier and now we’re doing it ourselves.”

According to Willis, the Plano store layout is similar to Fayetteville, with 32 checkout stands, all of which are open, where the traditional cashier lanes used to be. Employees lead shoppers to available registers, can help them if they need it or even check them out if the customer prefers. Full Story
