Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon shared in an internal memo that Judith McKenna, current president and CEO of Walmart International, will retire, effective September 11. At that time, Kath McLay will take over her role, and Chris Nicholas will become president and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S.
McKenna has worked with Walmart for 27 years, six of which was in her current role. Before then, she worked as CFO of Walmart U.K., chief development officer of Walmart U.S., then chief operating officer. As COO, she shaped the business’s ecommerce strategy, facilitating a digital transformation that ushered in the grocery pickup business, shared McMillon. She was also pivotal in creating the current omnichannel strategy.
“Judith’s leadership has positively impacted countless lives by creating opportunity and showing us how to lead with purpose,” wrote McMillon. “Her deep care for our associates around the globe and her passion for developing people has made a difference.”
McKenna will remain with the company in an advisory position until January 31, 2024, to ensure a smooth transition.
McLay joined Walmart in 2015, working in varying positions concerning strategy and supply chain, eventually leading the Neighborhood Market format. She is the current president and CEO of Sam’s Club U.S. and has led the company through 12 quarters of double-digit sales growth, shared McMillon.
Nicolas, current Walmart U.S. COO, will assume McLay’s position once she transitions to Walmart International CEO. He has held positions as CFO of both Walmart U.S. and Walmart International.
“I look forward to working with Kath and Chris in their new roles and am confident they will continue strengthening these businesses while leading with purpose and values,” wrote McMillon. Full Story
