Specialty Food Association

The American foodservice distributor US Foods has opened its most environmentally sustainable distribution facility to date. Joining the company’s 69 other facilities, the new 355,000-square-foot Sacramento, California, location enables the company to service its Northern California customer base more efficiently.

The facility houses foodservice products, fleet maintenance operations, a demonstration kitchen, a training center for product demonstrations and recipe innovations, and more.

“Our state-of-the-art facility in Sacramento enables US Foods to more efficiently serve independent restaurants and foodservice operators across Northern California due to its proximity to our growing customer base, and the energy-efficient attributes of the building and fleet reflect our commitment to sustainability,” said Dan Geissbuhler, US Foods area president, in a statement. “Sacramento's dynamic economy continues to foster business growth and expansion opportunities, and we’re eager to showcase the many benefits the facility will bring to our customers as we help them Make It.”

The facility includes the following sustainability features:

• a certification from Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

• solar array installations to be installed by the end of the year which will generate between 40 and 50 percent of the buildings energy needs

• a fleet of compressed natural gas trucks fueled by renewable natural gas

• onsite fueling stations to provide renewable diesel to the fleet
