United Natural Foods announced Tuesday the expansion of the company’s relationship with Too Good To Go, the largest business-to-consumer marketplace for excess food.
Too Good To Go connects consumers with businesses that have soon-to-expire surplus food via “surprise bags” reserved at a discount. The customer then has a timeframe to pick up the bag directly from the store.
Currently available in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Portland, UNFI’s expansion plan will include additional cities with UNFI retailers across the United States.
“A core value underpinning UNFI’s [Environmental, Social, Governance] ESG priorities is our long-standing commitment to doing what’s right for people and the planet while working to assure a safe and nutritious food supply for everyone,” said Matt Whitney, UNFI’s chief growth officer, in a statement. “We embrace the opportunity to use our expertise, influence, and scale to be a force for positive change within the food system, and we strive to help retailers implement simple solutions that make a real, lasting impact.”
This announcement is aligned with UNFI’s goals to reduce food waste in its distribution centers by 50 percent by 2025 and to eliminate all landfill waste from distribution center operations by 2030.
