UN Court Orders Israel to Unblock Gaza Food Aid
On Thursday, the International Court of Justice, an arm of the United Nations, ordered Israel to allow food aid access into Gaza.
The court issued the order following a request made in December by South Africa, which accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, according to UN News.
In a unanimous decision, the judges ruled that Palestinians in Gaza were facing famine and starvation.
The court order found that “the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have deteriorated further, in particular in the view of the prolonged and widespread deprivation of food and other basic necessities to which the Palestinians…have been subjected,” according to a statement from the International Court of Justice.
The decision means that Israel will, legally, have to take “all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, in full cooperation with the United Nations, the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to Palestinians throughout Gaza.”
According to the order, humanitarian assistance includes food, water, shelter, clothing, medical supplies, and more. Full Story
