Target has unveiled a strategy to develop larger-format stores. At nearly 150,000 square feet, the locations are more than 20,000 square feet larger than the chain average. This news comes at the heels of a recently opened larger-format location outside Houston, Texas.
While the retailer will continue to open stores of all sizes, the growth over the next few years will focus on the larger footprint. The company will also bring its reimagined store design, featuring a more open layout and localized elements to remodels and new stores across its chain.
“Target’s stores are at the heart of how we deliver for our guests, whether they browse the aisles, shop online or stop by for same-day services like Order Pickup and Drive Up,” said John Mulligan, Target EVP and COO, in a statement. “With our reimagined store design and larger store footprint that better supports our same-day services, we can give guests more of what they love while incorporating features that build on our commitment to sustainability, community, and helping all families discover the joy of everyday life.”
These larger stores will offer a wide assortment of merchandise offerings, support same-day fulfillment services, and deliver on Target's stores-as-hubs strategy for digital fulfillment.
Target’s new stores with a larger footprint will feature more space and a full range of merchandise. The need for space came from online orders that account for over 10 percent of its overall sales. At these locations expanded food and beverage, exclusive brand partnerships, and a curated mix of owned brands and national brands will take center stage.
To play its part in achieving net zero emissions by 2040, future stores and remodels will include updates such as natural (CO2) refrigerants to help lower the retailer’s emissions and electric vehicle charging ports with many locations including rooftop solar.
