Stop & Shop has announced that Flashfood, a digital marketplace that reduces food waste by connecting consumers with discounted food, expanded its program across 34 of its Massachusetts stores.
With Flashfood, shoppers save up to 50 percent off items nearing their best-by date, including meats, dairy, seafood, fresh produce, and baked goods. Customers can browse and buy discounted items through the Flashfood app, then pick up their order from the participating store.
The program has diverted 60 million pounds of food across the U.S. and Canada from landfills since its inception.
“We know that value and variety are important to our customers, and like Stop & Shop, many of our Massachusetts shoppers are focused on helping to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Holland Ricker, regional VP of operations for Stop & Shop, in a statement. “We’re proud of this recent expansion of Flashfood to our Massachusetts customers, and hope that shopping the Flashfood marketplace at Stop & Shop will help offer them sustainable shopping options with ways to also save significantly on groceries.”
Since the two companies began partnering in 2021, Flashfood has expanded to nearly 70 Stop & Shop stores across Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island, diverting nearly 170,000 pounds of food from landfills and preventing 319,200 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent from being released into the atmosphere.
“With 16-18 percent of Massachusetts households struggling with food insecurity, it is rewarding to know that our expansion will help improve accessibility to affordable food in the region,” said Josh Domingues, founder and CEO of Flashfood, in a statement.
The grocer’s expansion in Massachusetts is part of Flashfood’s upcoming growth across Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey.
