Starbucks has introduced Oleato, a line of coffee beverages that combines arabica coffee with a Partanna cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. The beverage was first made available in Starbucks stores in Italy this week with plans to expand to select markets, including southern. California this spring, and Japan, the Middle East, and the UK this year.
“During my first trip to Milan in 1983, I was captivated by the sense of community, connection, and passion for coffee I found in the city’s espresso bars. It was that trip that inspired me to bring the ritual of handcrafted espresso to Starbucks and to America,” said Howard Schultz, Starbucks interim chief executive officer, in a statement. “Oleato represents the next revolution in coffee that brings together an alchemy of nature’s finest ingredients.”
Starbucks was inspired to incorporate olive oil into the coffee after learning of a centuries-old Mediterranean tradition to have a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil as a daily routine, according to the company.
The following Starbucks Oleato beverages will be served:
• Oleato Caffè Latte, using the Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast, the coffee is infused with extra virgin olive oil and steamed with creamy oat milk.
• Oleato Golden Foam Cold Brew, where the olive oil is incorporated into the cold foam on the cold brew.
• Oleato Iced Shaken Espresso, an espresso-based iced coffee that uses oat milk infused with olive oil.
In addition, the debut location, the Starbucks Reserve in Milan, also offered an iced cortado and espresso martini made with olive oil. It also featured a drink, called Oleato Deconstructed, which incorporates espresso, olive oil, and passionfruit cold foam.
In select markets, customers will also be able to add a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil, called a “press,” as a customization option to select beverages.
