As part of its fifth annual U.S. online grocery survey conducted in March, Coresight Research tracked key insights into online purchasing behavior.
The report found that as many as 54 percent of U.S. consumers have used the internet to buy groceries in the past year, and 47 percent are expected to buy them online by next year, suggesting it plays an important role in consumer purchases.
Between 2020 and 2022 there has been a steady increase in respondents who do some of their grocery shopping online. In 2022, 28 percent noted this behavior, up from below 20 percent in 2020. On the other end, 49 percent of respondents indicated they do almost no grocery shopping online, down from about 60 percent.
In the race for market share of online grocery shoppers, Amazon and Walmart are neck and neck: 52 percent of respondents have reported purchasing groceries online from Amazon in the last year, while 51 percent report purchasing from Walmart. Target lags but is still considered the third largest domestic retailer for online grocery shopping.
