Pom Wonderful Takes Step Towards Sustainability

Specialty Food Association

The grower and producer of pomegranates and pomegranate juice, Pom Wonderful, announced yesterday a commitment to transition to fully recycled plastic bottles and a shift towards  renewable energy use of more than 90 percent.

The plastic bottle transition has begun for the Pomegranate, Pomegranate Blueberry, and Pomegranate Cherry juice product lines. Labels will feature a "100 percent Recycled Plastic" logo to mark the conversion.

A newly completed solar farm in Del Rey, California is expected to begin operations next month, and by 2023, it will deliver most of the company’s electricity needs.

"As an agricultural company at heart, we know that sustainability is critical to our future. That's why it's important that we make environmental sustainability a core principle of our work, and conserve natural resources to minimize our company's impact on the environment," said Derrick Miller, president of Pom Wonderful, in a statement. "As we celebrate the transition to rPET [recycled plastic] and renewable energy, we continue to look for new ways to minimize our impact, serve as community stewards, and enhance sustainability across every part of our business."

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Pom has also given research companies BCD Bioscience and Enagon $1 million each to find sustainable ways to repurpose pomegranate husks.
