Ouri’s Market, a gourmet kosher supermarket with one location in New Jersey and another in Brooklyn, has opened a third store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
The family-owned retailer is known for its high-end specialty food offerings, its service meat and seafood departments, and an expansive selection of prepared foods. The new, 8,000-square-foot store at 68th Street and Third Avenue features upscale finishes such as marble countertops and copper- and gold-plated fixtures. It is a block away from Grace’s Market, a longstanding fixture in Manhattan’s grocery scene, and not far from gourmet markets Citarella and Zabar’s.
Ouri’s Market founder Ouri Galili first began operating a produce store called Ouri’s Fruit in Brooklyn in 1976, and eventually expanded into organic farming through partnerships with growers in the Dominican Republic, and with a juice business called Juice from the Raw that specializes in juice cleanses.
“Where our competitors are after your wallet, we are after your health and want to provide you with the best quality juices for a reasonable price,” the company notes on its website.
The company is now run by Ouri Galili’s five children. A spokesperson for Ouri’s could not be reached for comment.
During a recent visit to the new store on a weekday afternoon, Ouri’s Market was bustling with shoppers perusing an expansive selection of mainstream and specialty produce items, freezer cases showcasing kosher meats and other Jewish specialties such as gefilte fish, and a bakery display featuring several varieties of fresh-baked challah and an assortment of kosher baked goods from local brands including Emily Massry, Grandma Sallie’s, The Rebbe’s Choice, Desserts by Rachelly, Bed-Sty Bake Shop, and Sheri’s Babycakes.
The store also includes a coffee station and fresh bakery counter featuring bagels and other store-baked goods.
Crackers and kichel—a lightly sweetened Jewish cracker or cookie—are also on display, including varieties from Belgium’s Best and Crack’n Up. Prepared kosher appetizers include items from Mazza by Marlene and Mazza by Stephanie Esses, along with Ouri’s own items.
The service seafood department includes a kosher sushi selection, and the service meat area includes a range of gourmet beef and lamb cuts and an on-site dry-aging meat locker. Alongside the meat counter, packaged dried meats include several varieties of uncured kosher beef sausage from Bronx-based Abeles & Heymann.
Ouri’s own brand appears on a variety of items, including fresh bottled juices, refrigerated salads, sandwiches, dips, and other prepared foods, and a huge assortment of seeds, nuts, and dried fruits and vegetables in plastic clam-top snack containers.
The store also features specialty food items, including an assortment of honeys and a few shelves filled with different types of tahini, including brands such as Al Arz, Achva, and Har Bracha, all based in Israel, and Soom, a woman-owned brand based in Philadelphia. These were merchandised alongside other sauces from around the world, including gochujang from Korea and ponzu and other soy sauces from Japan.
