More than 25,000 United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 members voted to approve one of three contracts with Meijer which have increased wages, will provide more paid time off, and better healthcare, according to the union, reports Fox 2 Detroit.

"Not only are our members receiving significant wage increases, but the length of time it takes them to get to the top rate has been reduced due to the closing of gaps in the wage scale," said John Cakmakci, president of UFCW Local 951. "I am proud of the members who served on the bargaining committee and worked together to achieve contract gains that improve the lives of their fellow members."

Meijer told SFA News Daily it was also pleased by the deal.

"We’re excited to have reached an agreement that includes significant investments in our team and demonstrates how much we value and care about our team members. This agreement also positions Meijer to continue providing great services to the communities we serve," said Meijer VP of labor relations, Ken Barton, in a statement.

According to the report, the contracts are valid for four years and went into effect on February 25. Contract terms include:

• An immediate wage increase of up to $1.50 per hour,

• More paid time for workers hired after October 23, 2005,

• A 25 percent increase in Meijer’s 401(k) match,

• More opportunities to obtain full-time positions,

• A shortened waiting period before a full-time employee can get healthcare benefits,

• A new paid family care leave benefit. Full Story
