Revolution Farms, a hydroponic lettuce farm in Caledonia, Michigan has partnered with Meijer to bring local lettuce and salad greens to shoppers across the supermarket’s six-state footprint. The farms’ greens are produced year-round using 90 percent less water and land.
"Supporting local farms and carrying the freshest, most nutritious ingredients is important to us and to our customers," said Sarah Jennings, Meijer produce buyer, in a statement. "As a Michigan, family company, we are committed to being good stewards of our community by not only constantly enhancing our own sustainable practices but also by using our shelves as a platform to promote brands that share our passion."
The farms’ packaging and harvesting techniques increase the salad greens’ shelf life. Because of their proximity to the Meijer stores, they can also go farm-to-plate in much less time than salad imported from the West Coast. They will also be featured in “Fresh from Meijer” salad kits, a ready-to-eat family-sized salad.
