Through the supermarket’s Flashfood sustainability strategy, Meijer has reached a milestone of diverting over 1 million pounds of potential food waste from landfills.
The program, launched with the Toronto-based foodtech company Flashfood in 2021, allows customers to order grocery items nearing their sell-by date at up to 50 percent off via the Flashfood app. Pickup "Flashfood zones," designated refrigerators and storage racks, are available at all Meijer locations.
"Minimizing food waste is a priority for us at Meijer and we're constantly looking for ways to cut down on landfill use and the production of greenhouse gases," said Erik Petrovskis, director of environmental compliance and sustainability at Meijer, in a statement. "Flashfood has been an exciting addition to our stores and I'm happy to see that the program is so effective in benefiting not just the environment, but also our customers."
Meijer has committed to reducing carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2025.
