Kroger Opens Alabama Spoke Facility

Specialty Food Association

Kroger's new spoke facility in Birmingham, Alabama is open. The location will serve as a last-mile cross-dock extension of Atlanta's nearby regional fulfillment center, providing Kroger Delivery to surrounding communities.

Customers can access Kroger Delivery through the Kroger app or website. The 50,000-square-foot facility will employ over 160 and increases the fulfillment network’s reach to up to 90 minutes from the hub facility.

"For people who live in food deserts, getting groceries can be a real challenge. Eliminating the distance to the grocery store from the doorstep can positively impact our citizens who are most in need of healthy food options,” said Cornell Wesley, director of the Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, for the city of Birmingham. “As a community, we are excited about Kroger choosing Birmingham for this expansion and are eager to partner with them in exploring more ways to solve for food deserts."

The expansion efforts represent an extension of the company’s partnership with the Ocado Group, a grocery ecommerce company that brings artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation to the facilities.
