An outbreak of salmonella linked to a Lexington, Kentucky manufacturing facility has caused J.M. Smucker Co., the parent company of Jif, to voluntarily recall some of its potentially affected products.
Data provided by the CDC indicates that 14 people have reported illnesses because of the salmonella outbreak, two of whom were hospitalized.
"Five out of five people reported consuming peanut butter and four of the five people specifically reported consuming different varieties of Jif brand peanut butter prior to becoming ill," according to the FDA.
Affected products include Jif 's Squeeze Creamy Peanut Butter, Creamy Peanut butter 200 Cups, Dark Roast Creamy Peanut Butter, Light Creamy Peanut Butter, Creamy Peanut Butter, Crunchy Peanut Butter, and To Go Creamy Peanut Butter 8 Individual Cups. A full list of affected products along with their lot codes can be found here.
The FDA recommends that affected products be thrown away immediately, and all surfaces and utensils that the product has come in contact with should be sanitized.
