Over half (65 percent) of grocery retailers are extremely or fairly confident in the strength of the overall economy going into 2021, reports Supermarket News. More than 150 grocers were surveyed on the economy, sales projections, store count and hiring, and the impact of COVID-19.
When asked specifically about grocery sales, 82 percent of respondents said they expect sales to either stay the same or increase during the first six months of 2021, with 46 percent anticipating a sales increase of 1 to 9 percent.
Sixty percent of respondents said they are introducing or expanding online grocery shopping and delivery to sustain sales and 59 percent said they are continuing enhanced safety measures like masks and PPE, plexiglass partitions, and social distancing.
