Giant Food Incorporates Loop Technology

Specialty Food Association

Giant Food will bring Terracycle’s Loop technology to the Washington D.C.-metro area, reports Progressive Grocer.

Terracycle is a waste management business combatting food waste through recycling initiatives; its Loop service enables durable, “Loop-ready” products from companies that partner with the platform to be recycled at Loop Return Points, then returned to the brands to be cleaned and reused. As part of this effort, Giant will make these products available in its D.C. stores along with the return bin.

“Giant is committed to taking sustainable actions that reduce plastic waste from our landfills and improve our environment,” said Diane Couchman, VP category management, nonperishables at Giant Food. “We are excited to partner with Loop, a global leader in eliminating waste, to offer our customers a program that allows them to shop their favorite products and help our environment.”

Giant Food is the latest grocer to roll out this technology, which occurred less than six months after it was implemented in Kroger's Fred Meyer stores.

“Loop’s goal has always been to grow, scale and be accessible to consumers around the world,” noted Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle and Loop, in a statement. “With world-class retailers like Giant bringing Loop to their physical brick-and-mortar locations, we are giving consumers what they’ve been asking for since Loop was introduced in 2019–the ability to purchase the products they use every day in durable reusable containers, with the convenience of shopping at their local market.”

To ensure reusable containers used in the process are correctly sanitized, Loop consults with a third-party cleaning solutions company, Ecolab Inc. for on-site service. Full Story
