Giant Food will close its fulfillment centers, which facilitate home grocery delivery, in Hannover, Maryland; Manassas, Virginia; and Milford, Delaware; reports local news source WTOP. The 80,000-square-foot location in Manassas opened three months ago.
The announcements affect an estimated 400 jobs. A letter to these employees said they would have the opportunity to apply for other roles in the company.
“Our mission is to meet the changing needs of our delivery customers who are increasingly looking for faster delivery, more delivery time slots, and a broader assortment,” a Giant spokesman told WTOP. “We are adapting our operating structure to better meet these needs and provide this important service for our customers through a localized fulfillment model.”
The company shared that it is finalizing a fulfillment model for these delivery orders. The news source noted that many retailers process orders in physical grocery store locations and are carried by employees or third-party delivery workers. Full Story
