FDA Warns Bakery Giant to Stop Falsely Claiming Allergens

The FDA recently warned Bimbo Bakery, USA, owner of brands including Sara Lee, Thomas’, and Entenmann’s, to stop listing allergens that are allegedly not present in their products, reports AP News.

The maker is accused of “misbranding” their products by incorrectly including ingredients such as sesame or tree nuts on labels.

“Food labels must be truthful and not misleading,” officials said. The warning followed inspections late last year at Bimbo plants in Phoenix, Arizona, and Topeka, Kansas, that make Sara Lee, and Brownberry breads.

The FDA further asserted that allergen labeling is not a suitable substitute for preventing cross-contamination in factories, according to the report. Nonprofit group Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), said that these labelling issues “does a disservice” to the roughly 33 million people in the U.S. with food allergies.

“Our community relies on accurate product labeling for their health and safety,” said FARE CEO Sung Poblete. “These findings about Bimbo Bakeries’ products undermine their trust and further limit their choices.” Full Story
