DoorDash Reveals Ordering Trends

Although the top items ordered on DoorDash in 2022 remained the same (fries and burgers), consumers continue to order more healthy options, including salads and tacos, according to one of two reports from DoorDash released today. One focuses on restaurant ordering trends and the other on alcohol ordering trends.

On the beverage side, flavored malt beverages, hard seltzers, and hard cider are mainstays. Ready-to-drink cocktails have also seen five times the growth in online delivery order in 2022. The report also found that vodka and tequila were the most popular and fastest-growing alcoholic beverages to purchase online for delivery in 2022.

When customers were making decisions on what to purchase, menu pricing and selection were the top considerations when trying a new restaurant. This relates to another finding: consumers continue to seek affordability. As such, when choosing a delivery method in 2023, low fees were the most important feature, overshadowing 2022’s result of a good ordering experience.

When it comes to the time of day, there was an order frequency growth at every mealtime, however, the largest increases were seen at breakfast, up 31 percent in the fiscal year 2022 compared to 2021, early morning, up 36 percent, and late night, up 23 percent. The company attributed this jump in early ordering to continued interest in remote work and flexible work schedules.
