Dollar General released a statement yesterday detailing its continued relationship with Feeding America, announcing an additional $1 million donation to commemorate its one-year partnership anniversary. This news comes at the heels of an extended partnership with the American Red Cross, providing $300,000 and in-kind donations in response to recent eastern Kentucky floods.
The company’s relationship with Feeding America is in line with its commitment to provide up to 20 million meals a year. During the previous fiscal year, it fought food security by providing over 3.7 million meals.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with Feeding America and help advance their mission of ensuring equitable access to nutritious food for all,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO, in a statement. “Food insecurity impacts people of all ages in communities across the country. We are proud to leverage our unique store footprint to help increase access to a variety of nutritious foods that help provide meals to individuals facing hunger.”
In continuing its relationship with the American Red Cross, over 18,000 Dollar General stores across the U.S. are accepting in-store collections to benefit the nonprofit's response efforts. Since 2010, Dollar General has supported the organization with $6.4 million in donations and in-store collections.
“Today’s extension of our annual American Red Cross partnership furthers our commitment to Serving Others by supporting communities across the country when they need it most,” Vasos said in a statement. “Additionally, we wanted to support the ongoing critical recovery efforts in Kentucky through product donations to those in need, as well as financial assistance to the American Red Cross, specially earmarked to our Kentucky neighbors and the recovery of those communities.”
In addition to the company’s efforts working with nonprofit organizations, it has begun the Dollar General Employee Assistance Foundation which aims to provide assistance to employees who have faced hardship, awarding over $15.2 million since its founding in 2005.
