Aisle 24, a fully automated, 24/7 cashierless chain based in Toronto, has announced the opening of its newest Toronto location featuring an integrated security solution to protect customers and enable franchise owners to manage the operation remotely.

The solution includes surveillance coverage, custom access control, remote control, and analytics designed to facilitate inventory management, and other business operations. According to a statement by the company, surveillence is key to the company’s expansion throughout Canada.

The technology is provided by Smart Installs Inc., a customer security provider, Axis Communications, a communications integrator partner who provided the video surveillance and audio technology, and 2N audio/video intercommunication system. All of the technology is streamed directly to an AI-enabled video management system.

“These are hyper-urban grocery stores, and—given today’s busy lifestyle—people appreciate having this kind of safe and secure convenience in their neighborhood or right in the building where they live,” John Douang, co-founder and CEO of Aisle 24, said in a statement. “By emphasizing safety and security while accumulating business intelligence, we’re offering franchise owners the ability to monetize empty space and build a profitable business that places far fewer demands on their time than running a traditional grocery store.”

Aisle 24 is “touchless” meaning customers use the smartphone app to unlock doors to enter the retail space, load their cart, and self-checkout at a kiosk without the aid of anyone onsite.

The retailer has 16 locations throughout Ontario and Quebec with plans to launch at least 40 more stores throughout Canada by the end of the year. It also plans to expand to the U.S., South America, and parts of Europe and Asia.
