(Somersworth, N.H.) Somersworth-based Popzup Popcorn is expanding its product line to include convenient two-ounce ready-to-eat bags for two of its most popular flavors—Butter Me Up and Cheddar Head. Previously only offered in five-ounce bags, this new product is perfect for grab-and-go snacking, thanks to its smaller size. The two-ounce bags will be available via the Popzup website www.popzup.com, which features a store locator function. Popzup Popcorn is sold at nearly 2,000 retail outlets throughout the country in stores that include; Formaggio Kitchen NYC, Cardullo’s Boston, Di Bruno’s Philadelphia, Central Markets in Texas, and Roche Brothers in Massachusetts.
Co-owners Marty and Julie Lapham make their popcorn by hand using pure and simple ingredients including kernels, butter, and cheese from the farm. “It feels good to follow this dream and to have people every day let me know they love our products,” says Julie. “It goes to show that doing the right thing is the right thing to do.”
The Laphams founded Popzup Popcorn in 2015 with the driving belief that food is better when it’s made from unaltered ingredients. “I have always been passionate about healthy food and the effect it has on families and the world,” says Julie. With more than 25 years of experience in natural foods product development, Julie was a pioneer in helping to bring the normalization of natural foods to mainstream family life.
Marty’s career was in branding and marketing companies in the US and Europe. In 2015 he designed the creative invention of the Popzup Popper, a safe and healthy way to microwave popcorn that’s eco-friendly and chemical-free. The Popzup Popper—which continues to be available online and in stores— features locally grown, non-GMO kernels and the container is reusable, recyclable, and compostable.
“Our next step was to start blending popcorn seasonings,” says Julie. Popzup now offers eight seasoning flavors, ranging from a sweet Vermont Maple to a savory Real Butter & Sea Salt to a spicy Sweet Sriracha Chili, in glass shaker bottles. Popzup ready-to-eat bagged popcorn evolved as the seasonings took off, says Julie.
“We took the fan favorite seasoning blends and used them to flavor Popzup ready-to-eat popcorn.” The 5-oz bags are available in four healthy flavors: Butter Me Up, Cheddar Head, Cheesie Herbie (vegan) and Maple Cinnamon Toast (vegan).
Julie emphasizes Popzup’s goal of doing the right things and being accountable to the farmers, the employees, customers, and the environment. This new snack innovation, and those that pop up in the future, will continue serve this purpose and the community, even as the company grows.
