FreshDirect shared Thursday that it has added plant-based sushi rolls and onigiri from Konscious Sushi to its ecommerce platform.
The plant-based offerings are vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and made with clean ingredients. They are flash-frozen and can be prepared in the microwave, with a warm-water bath, or thawed at room temperature.
“FreshDirect whole-heartedly supports the emerging plant-based seafood category. Konscious Sushi does a fantastic job of creating great products that lean into the versatility of vegetables and legumes, without compromising on taste,” said Susan Schreiber, associate director of prepared foods, bakery, & deli categories, at FreshDirect, in a statement.

• Plant Based Rainbow Roll
• Onigiri, Kale Gomae
• Onigiri, Japanese Vegetable Curry
• Onigiri, Korean BBQ Mushroom
• Onigiri, Roasted Corn & Poblano
The sushi rolls include eight pieces and retails for $9.99 per box. The onigiri includes two per box and retails for $8.99.
The products are made from whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruit. FreshDirect recommends pairing the rolls with shredded nori, sesame seeds, chili crunch, or spicy mayo. It also added that the onigiri can be lightly fried and then wrapped in a nori sheet.
Plant-based seafood is an emerging market that has gradually begun to gain market share.
