Walmart to End Single-Use Plastic, Paper Use in 2 States

Specialty Food Association

Walmart recently announced its timeline to phase out single-use plastic and paper distribution at its stores in New York and Colorado, according to Insider. The policy went into effect on New Year’s Day in Colorado and will be implemented by January 18 in New York.

Customers in these states will be able to purchase reusable bags at the store with options ranging from 74 cents to $3.98 or must bring their own bag. The company has been pushing sustainability in its stores, focusing on bag distribution since 2020. Single-use bags have already been eliminated in New Jersey, Maine, and Vermont.

"Eliminating single-use bags is part of our commitment to achieve zero waste across our operations and ultimately shift gradually toward a circular economy built on advancing reuse, refill, and recycling habits," Walmart spokeswoman Lauren Willis said.

The company has indicated its intention to achieve zero waste in its own U.S. and Canada operations by 2025. Full Story
