U.S. food safety officials are investigating an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to select brands of cantaloupe, reports NPR. At least 43 people in 15 states have gotten sick from the bacteria, 17 of whom were hospitalized.
Of the 29 people reporting illness, 15 were directly linked to cantaloupe exposure, according to the FDA.
Three brands have recalled cantaloupe and pineapple products sold in U.S. states and parts of Canada: Malchita, Aldi, and Vinyard. Stop and Shop said recently that it issued a recall of Trufresh Cantaloupe purchased between October 23 to October 31 at 183 store locations due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.
The recalled fruit was sold at stores in the following states: Arizona, California, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Texas, and Florida; however, it may have reached consumers in other locations through further retail distribution.
