Meijer and Save Mart and Lucky stores are the latest supermarkets to highlight discounted prices on holiday fare.
In the midwest, Meijer anticipates selling 1 million turkeys this holiday season. Customers can purchase Meijer brand frozen turkeys for 59 cents per pound through Nov. 25, which is roughly the same cost Meijer offered its customers in the 1930s, said Josh Potts, Meijer poultry buyer.
"We know turkey prices are up significantly in a lot of places this year, but our highest priority is bringing value and quality to our customers this holiday season," Potts said in a statement. "We're working hard to keep prices low for our customers so they can enjoy this holiday staple with their family and friends."
The retailer is offering both fresh and frozen birds, including:
• Meijer brand frozen turkey at 59 cents per pound
• Honeysuckle White brand frozen turkey at $1.09 per pound
• Meijer brand fresh turkey at $1.19 per pound
• Butterball brand frozen turkey at $1.29 per pound
• Butterball fresh turkey at $1.99 per pound
• True Goodness by Meijer brand frozen antibiotic free turkey at $2.19 per pound
Fresh turkeys will be delivered daily, beginning the week of Nov. 12. All Meijer brand turkeys will be limited to one per customer.
Save Mart and Lucky stores throughout California and Northern Nevada, meanwhile, are beating last year's price on frozen Jennie-O turkeys priced at 47 cents a pound with a purchase of $25, in addition to savings on other Thanksgiving meal essentials.
"A recent Nielson IQ report (September 2023) found that 90 percent of consumers have changed how they shop in order to manage expenses with 32 percent saying they are focusing on essentials. During the holidays we make it a priority to deliver value to our customers at a time when they need it most, affording them quality time with friends and family," said Mark Van Buskirk, senior vice president merchandising and marketing at The Save Mart Companies, in a statement.
Save Mart and Lucky Rewards members can take advantage of digital savings with a whole basket coupon ($10 off a $50 purchase) available starting Friday, November 10 on the Save Mart and Lucky apps. Beginning November 8 through November 14, shoppers will be able to save 20 percent off all wines, mix and match on six bottles or more.
