NYC Delays Foie Gras Ban

The ban on foie gras, a specialty food product made from duck or goose liver, was originally intended to go into effect on November 25; however, a lawsuit from two farms in Hudson Valley presented on September 15 has delayed the process, according to The New York Times.

The city first ruled in favor of the ban in 2019 over concerns about the inhumane practices that go into enlarging animal livers for the dish. The two duck farms, La Belle Farm and Hudson Valley Foie Gras, are able to continue selling the livers to foodservices in the city, and the law will be considered by local courts.

According to the report, the owners of the farms note the loss of business and 400 jobs that would be put in jeopardy if the ban were to be implemented. They also contend that farming practices outside of the city are out of the authority of the New York City Council. Full Story (Subscription Required)
