More than half of consumers say that inflation has changed their grocery store spending this year, with about a third saying that inflation will influence the way they celebrate this holiday season, according to a survey by Market Force. The researcher polled over 2,000 consumers who weighed in about their experience and satisfaction with major U.S. grocery brands.
Many consumers note strategies considered “being more intentional" with planning and shopping. Specific tactics include a focus on meal planning, increased use of coupons, monitoring sales, bulk buying, buying less prepared food and less meat, or trading down to store brands.
According to Phil Doriot, Market Force's VP of customer success and analytics, consumers with lower- or middle-income levels are most likely to have changed their behavior.
"These families are being forced to change their shopping and eating habits, because of higher prices," Doriot said in a statement.
Across the country, consumers are coping with higher prices during the holidays by slimming down their menus, inviting fewer friends and family to festivities, or by asking guests to bring dishes to round out the event.
