Community Groceries, an independent retailer in Missouri, will begin using Amazon’s Just Walk Out checkout-free technology system beginning December 16, reports Winsight Grocery Business. This is the first time Amazon will install the cashier-less system at a grocer it does not own.

“Amazon’s technologies change the way we think about shopping,” said Alyssa Groenig, director of sales and marketing at Community Groceries, in a statement. “I, like most people, have a very full schedule, and grocery shopping is a tedious task for me. This new experience will enable me and all of our guests to shop efficiently and be on our way, with no checkout lines and no hassle.”

The store will also be fitted with Amazon One palm recognition in addition to Just Walk Out capabilities. Both technologies eliminate the checkout lines by allowing users to insert their credit card or hover a palm at an entry gate to shop. Once inside, cameras will automatically add items to a customer’s virtual cart, and once the customer leaves, they will be charged for the items taken.

“We are thrilled to work with Community Groceries to unlock a fast and frictionless experience for their shoppers in Kansas City, one we believe they’ll enjoy very much,” said Dilip Kumar, VP of AWS applications at Seattle-based Amazon, in a statement. “Community Groceries is renowned for encouraging healthy lifestyles and focusing first and foremost on their local community, so we’re honored to have them as our first customer in the grocery vertical to launch a Just Walk Out technology and Amazon One-enabled store.”

The latest rollout reflects Amazon’s efforts to bring the technology to more locations. It recently enabled a store at an arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Full Story
