The Texas grocer H-E-B scored highest on the first dunnhumby eCommerce Retailer Preference Index, slightly topping Amazon, according to Supermarket News. Released Tuesday, the report, courtesy of dunnhumby, a global customer data science company, polled 3,000 U.S. households to rank 54 retailers.
The retailers were ranked by customer preference drivers of owned digital asset usage, ease and reliability, substitute options, products and price, share of wallet online, digital market penetration, and a change in web visits composite score between 2019 and 2021.
The rankings for the top eight e-grocer retailers are as follows:
1. H-E-B
2. Amazon
3. Amazon Fresh
4. Walmart
5. Sam’s Club
6. Kroger
7. BJ’s
8. Sprouts Farmers Market
“In a near statistical tie,” according to the report, H-E-B surpassed Amazon and the company’s supermarket banner Amazon Fresh. Supermarket News found that the reports indicate H-E-B generated the highest degree of emotional connection and online share of wallet. The grocer saw its customers shift to online spending as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, causing their e-grocery spending to increase 27 percent.
“H-E-B’s impressive performance proves that it’s possible to compete and win against Amazon when it comes to grocery e-commerce. Their success offers midsize and regional retailers a road map on how to succeed online,” Grant Steadman, president of Chicago-based dunnhumby North America, said in a statement.
The dunnhumby report also found that COVID accelerated grocery e-commerce growth, but rather than raise the height of the e-commerce sales ceiling, it may have only quickened the time to it, especially when many factors including inflation are negatively impacting e-commerce growth. Full Story
