Food Businesses Support Maui Wildfire Victims

To support those affected by the deadly wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, food businesses are rallying support through various relief efforts including monetary and food donations and other on-the-ground support.

D.C.-based chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen came to the island, Wednesday, to offer assistance and provide sandwiches, fruit, and water to first responders. World Central Kitchen is also working with local chefs to prepare and deliver food to firefighters and families impacted by the fires.

Dole Food Company, which was founded in Hawaii in 1851 and continues to operate in the state, announced that it's donating $50,000 to the American Red Cross in Hawaii and $50,000 to the Maui Food Bank.

The Orange County Register shared various efforts from food agencies in Los Angeles to provide assistance to affected Hawaiin residents. They include:

• Aunty Maile’s Hawaiian Restaurant in Torrance, California, and other organizations are collecting supplies with the International Longshoreman & Warehouse Union in Wilmington, North Carolina.

• Chef Charles Akau, with the California pop-up Mila’s Kitchen Hawaii, is partnering with small businesses and organizations in the area for a future plate lunch fundraiser, with 100 percent of proceeds going to Maui relief.

• Aloha Food Factory in Alhambra, California is donating 10 percent of sales through the end of the month to relief efforts.
