FDA Investigates Hep A in Strawberries

Specialty Food Association

The FDA, CDC, and domestic state and local partners are investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A infections linked to the consumption of organic strawberries.

The strawberries were likely purchased between March 5 and April 25 of this year from Baja California, Mexico. The products are no longer available for purchase in stores, as they have exceeded their shelf life. The FDA warns that customers who purchased FreshKampo and HEB fresh organic strawberries between the two dates, and who then froze the strawberries should not consume them. These products may have been sold at the following food retailers, among others:

• HEB

• Kroger

• Safeway

• Sprouts Farmers Market

• Trader Joe’s

• Walmart

• Weis Markets

• WinCo Foods

There are 17 reported cases of illnesses and 12 hospitalizations in the U.S., in California, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
