Upcycled food company Renewal Mill collaborates with single-origin spice company Burlap & Barrel to craft a ‘classic treat with a sustainable spin’ for Earth Day 2021

OAKLAND, CA – March 31, 2021 – Oakland-based upcycled food startup Renewal Mill and single-origin spice company Burlap & Barrel have made sustainability indulgent by combining reimagined and fresh ingredients in a new Sustainable Snickerdoodle Cookie Mix.

With aromas of cinnamon and vanilla folded into a soft and chewy cookie, the Sustainable Snickerdoodle Cookie Mix is full of nostalgia. Heirloom Royal Cinnamon strikes a rich balance of sweetness and spiciness that Vietnamese cinnamon is famed and favored for. While the cookie mix’s hero ingredient, upcycled okara flour, transforms food waste into a decadent solution with every batch.

The Royal Cinnamon is equitably sourced from smallholder farmers around the ancient Vietnamese capital city of Huế. Upcycled okara flour is sourced from the nutritious soybean pulp leftover from soymilk production. Both brands focus on chef-driven innovation. The snickerdoodle recipe was expertly crafted by 5x James Beard Award-Winning cookbook author Alice Medrich who boasts expertise in dessert and alternative flours.

This collaboration is the fruit of a friendship started in 2018 between Renewal Mill’s and Burlap & Barrel’s founders. Partnering with a fellow brand committed to responsibly sourcing premium ingredients has been a dream (and access point for future products). This product is the latest in Burlap & Barrel’s series of successful CPG collaborations that have included everything from jam to chocolate to soap.

The Sustainable Snickerdoodle mix will be available online via both companies’ websites for $7.99 beginning April 1st as a kick-off to Earth Month. More information and samples available to press upon request.

About Renewal Mill
Renewal Mill is an award-winning, next-generation ingredient company that fights climate change and global food loss by upcycling byproducts from food manufacturing into premium ingredients and products. We’re building a new circular economy of food that’s better for the people and the planet we love. Our flagship ingredient is organic okara, a high fiber, high protein, gluten-free flour made from the nutritious soybean pulp leftover when you make soymilk. We use the okara in a number of plant-based products including a vegan, soft-baked chocolate chip cookie, a 1-to-1 gluten-free baking flour, and a line of vegan “just add oil and water” baking mixes. We can be found in 200+ markets in California, online platforms like Thrive Market, Good Eggs, and FreshDirect, and at www.renewalmill.com. The company is led by two go-getter women: Caroline Cotto currently serves as Board President of the Upcycled Food Association and Claire Schlemme was named a 2020 Tory Burch Fellow.
